I watched this 2 Part Youtube Tutorial on Mid-Side encoding/decoding a little while ago and thought you guys might like it.
by Daniel Booth. He has some other good Vids too.
Fist of all it’s by an Aussie so it’s gonna be good, and second it’s easy to follow and teaches you how to do your own M-S processing without any M-S plugins. Marvellous!
The coolest thing about this is that you can run your fav bands tracks though it and hear what they had hard panned and what they ran mono. It was a big eye opener for me and a great insight into how the songs were mixed. I was listening to Mars Volta and on the side channels and all i could hear was crazy guitar and nothing else. Cool! and then i listened to Mid only and as expected it was mainly just Bass n Drums n Vox, but still its pretty cool hearing it in a new way like this. It was almost like hearing the multitrack. You can do a more mono or more stereo remix of old songs if you want.
Anyway give it a go. Get some old albums out and run them through this M-S decoding craziness and then have a lie down.
