I was reading some stuff and i thought i’de regurgitate it on here because i’ve got nothing better to do. Well…
If you want to get a bigger sound in your recordings its pretty easy you just turn things up in your mix until it sounds big and awesome, problem solved! next.
No but seriously there is this stupid thing that stops you going past 0dBFS without some bad noises. I don’t know why its there and if you know how to remove it let me know. j/k So you can’t just turn it up forever, trust me I’ve tried. And i will probably try again tomorrow. Maybe pootools 14 will fix it. So anyway i guess you want some useful info by now…..ok. Seeing volume isn’t our full answer we can try to make it sound big without the volume. We hear a sound in a big room or space to sound big even if it isn’t that loud. Reverb can help us here, but in general it sounds good using a real room sound. Find a large room and put a mic up about 3 metres or more away from the source along with your close mic and mix them together. You can even compress the room mic to make it’s sustain sound even bigger.
If you already have a recording that only has close mics, then play back that sound through a speaker into a large room and stick a mic up and re-record it. Sometimes a simple stereo recording of a band can sound great and big because it doesn’t have any close mics in it.
